In an ASP model, patient image data and information is stored and managed at a central Image Center instead of on a server at the hospital. The images are accessed through a secure direct connection to the Image Center and viewed for diagnosis from the workstations at the hospital. All reports can be printed and then stored at the Image Center.

The ASP model saves hospitals money that would have gone to the purchasing of expensive server and storage hardware and software. This service also gives Internet access that is similar to teleradiology systems, which saves even more money for hospitals that do not have in-house radiologists to diagnose exams.

Services such as remote diagnosis by third-party specialty radiologists, and sharing of Teaching Files and Research Cases make ASP a worthwhile and cost effective solution.
